Using CBD oil for your self-care practice can be a powerful way to create change and care for yourself

What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol. CBD is one of over 100 chemicals found in cannabis and hemp plants known as cannabinoids. Unlike its more well-known cousin, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is non-psychoactive, which means it doesn’t make people high. Even better, CBD has been scientifically proven to counteract the psychoactive effects of THC, such as increased anxiety induced by excessive THC ingestion.

CBD has quickly garnered popularity among people seeking a distinctive approach to everyday wellness. What makes CBD so special is its non-psychoactive nature, along with its potential benefits for pain, anxiety, sleep, and stress. That means CBD products are hot on people’s wish lists. These days, many individuals find this miraculous plant extract an alternate treatment option for their problems, ranging from pain relief to stress management.

Where does CBD come from?

CBD is typically extracted from hemp, which has been bred to contain minimal THC. Hemp-derived CBD products offer the properties of the entire plant (CBD and other cannabinoids) without any psychoactive effects caused by a high level of THC.

CBD is a type of phytocannabinoid or plant-based cannabinoid. Along with other cannabinoids such as cannabinol and cannabigerol, CBD makes up the nearly one hundred different types of compounds found naturally in Cannabis sativa plants. The human body also creates endocannabinoids which are important for maintaining homeostasis in our bodies’ systems like appetite and sleep cycles.

The human body is a complex organism with many cells and tissues. The endocannabinoid system, which we all have, was designed to protect our bodies from internal or external injury by regulating the flow of substances throughout different systems in our gut depending on their needs. Phytocannabinoids are one type of chemical component found within cannabis that helps regulate how these chemicals work together for us when ingested as well as applied topically- they’re especially helpful because they can be used more often than medicinal marijuana due to not being restricted federally as other cannabinoids and phytochemicals might be.

HOW CBD WORKS WITH OUR BODY?

CBD interacts with the body and the brain through the endocannabinoid system and stimulates ECS to produce its own cannabinoids. THC and other cannabinoids operate directly on the ECS’s cannabinoid receptors. However, CBD is a little different.

The Endocannabinoid System and CBD

To understand how CBD works with our internal system, let’s understand the Endocannabinoid System. The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, is a complex network of cell receptors and neurotransmitters that keeps the body in homeostasis. This system regulates various functions, like appetite, sleep, pain, and the immune system.

When something goes wrong with your health, ECS in your body releases natural cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) to restore balance. There are two types of cannabinoid receptors – CB1 and CB2. The first type, called the “CB1” receptor, helps regulate many functions related to our central nervous system. In contrast, the second one manages abilities such as pain perception, fever relief, appetite stimulation or inhibition and memory extinction, etc.

CBD stimulates the endocannabinoids to generate its own cannabinoids and works to help your body’s natural tendency for maintaining homeostasis (the body’s ability to maintain a stable, relatively constant internal environment against external forces).
